Our Journey to Mount Lorette
Located in Kananaskis Country, Mount Lorette offers a serene escape into the wilderness. The drive from Calgary takes just over an hour, and as we approached, the surrounding landscape quickly transitioned into a majestic mix of towering peaks, lush forests, and pristine rivers. The mountain stands tall, inviting hikers of all levels to explore its trails.
One of the highlights of our trip was the Mount Lorette Ponds. These crystal-clear ponds offer a peaceful spot to relax, fish, or even enjoy a picnic by the water. We spent some time walking the easy trails around the ponds, taking in the incredible reflections of the surrounding mountains in the calm waters. It’s an ideal stop for families or those looking for a low-effort nature walk.
Hiking and Wildlife
For those of you who love hiking, Mount Lorette has some fantastic trails that vary in difficulty. The Lorette Creek Trail is a moderate hike that takes you through dense forests, alongside a clear creek, and leads to incredible viewpoints where you can see the valley below. Keep your eyes peeled—this area is known for wildlife spotting, including elk, deer, and even the occasional black bear.
If you’re visiting in winter, Mount Lorette transforms into a snowy wonderland with opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. We tried snowshoeing on the nearby trails and it was a magical experience walking through the snow-covered trees.
Practical Information for Visiting Mount Lorette
Mount Lorette is part of the larger Bow Valley Provincial Park, which is open year-round. There is no admission fee to visit, making it a budget-friendly outing. The ponds and trails are accessible from sunrise to sunset, and there are restroom facilities and picnic areas available at the parking lot.
Since Kananaskis Country is a protected area, a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for vehicles. It costs $15 per day per vehicle, or you can opt for an annual pass for $90. Be sure to check the weather and trail conditions before your visit, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
A Cozy Stay at Mount Engadine Lodge
For those who want to extend their stay in Kananaskis, we highly recommend the Mount Engadine Lodge, located about 30 minutes from Mount Lorette. This charming alpine-style lodge offers a true wilderness experience, with cozy rooms and private cabins nestled in the forest.
Room rates range from $350 to $600 CAD per night, depending on the season and accommodation type, with breakfast and dinner included in the price. The lodge also offers an afternoon tea service, which we thoroughly enjoyed after a day of exploring. If you’re looking for a more luxurious yet still nature-immersive experience, this is the place to stay.
